So This Is The New Year

Happy 2012 dear readers! I'm writing this post on the long train ride back to NYC, looking out the window at a sea of white snow and reminiscing about the holidays. I hope you're all doing well, and I wish you all the best in the new year!

Here are just a few pictures from the past few weeks in Manhattan and Rochester - lots of Christmas lights, early new years parties (with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots!), and merry-go-round rides with my niece. How did you celebrate the holidays?

Gael

Gael GarcĂa Bernal in Flaunt #98

"Right now, let's say, there's going to be less money going around, and less brands, but we're going to realize we didn't need them to begin with. But, at the same time, we're going to realize to have less money is going to lead us to enjoy other things that are there. That means playing a lot, having fun, writing, reading -- things that don't cost money. Experimenting with things, like going with your family somewhere, even to a park. It's little things. We're all going to live it. It's important to rise up and be there for that challenge and enjoy it, to not be scared about it. On the contrary, this is a good time. Of course I am optimistic. I'd be silly if I wasn't."

Winter Kate

Eden Jacket; Gypsy Rose Vest; Harlow Leather Jacket; Clementine Cami; Jasmine Cardy

Singer22 has the new Winter Kate collection by Nicole Richie available for pre-order! I'm loving it all so far, but I thought this line was supposed to be "affordable"? Oh well, I'll be saving my pennies for one of the jackets - the Jasmine Cardy has my name on it. Nicole Richie can do no wrong!

Sienna

Hello, gorgeous! No matter what anyone says, Sienna will always be one of my ultimate style icons. She hits it out of the ballpark (almost) every time! What I would give to be able to play around in her closet for an hour or two...

The Other Face of Ashley Olsen

Work it! Ashley Olsen posed for the camera and chatted with Marc Jacobs for the latest issue of V MAN - check out just a few quotes from the interview below:

On doing a "celebrity line": "The way I look at it, I had a career as a child. I had a career in an industry in which the media kind of... they're obsessed with the young girl thing. But when I turned 18, I moved to New York, and I haven't really done anything to be a celebrity. I've been transitioning from acting as a kid to doing something that I'm choosing for myself - to be a part of the fashion industry... the outside perception is very different because you do have celebrity brands, people like Jessica Simpson and Kimora Lee Simmons, and those are celebrity brands because they have their names on them."

On working with Mary-Kate: "The Row is really something that I'm doing while my sister still wants to focus on acting. She's my partner in The Row, but she trusts me with the every day. I mean, I see her like ten times a day."

On being different from her twin sister: "When I was 14, 15, 16, 17, it was harder because the two of us were still very similar. We had to work through what's special about us, and then the media had to work through it... I've never been one to engage the media to say that I'm different. I actually did the opposite and I totally went internal. I was like, "See y'all!" I want to be behind the scenes, and I don't want people to know anything about my personal life. I have a job, I take it very seriously, and I work really hard."

NY, I Love You: William Rast F/W 09.10

Ooh this is one of my favorite shows so far, courtesy of Justin Timberlake no less! I posted pictures of the entire William Rast F/W 09.10 collection on The Fashion Spot - just click it to check them out. Unfortunately they're low quality, hopefully high quality pics will surface soon!

The collection consisted of both womenswear and menswear, and presumably shoes from the upcoming William Rast shoe line.
I was really impressed by the styling of the whole show, and the whole
Americana rock 'n roll theme. I loved the jeans, which is really the main focus of William Rast. I would gladly incorporate any of the studded or patchwork jeans into my closet! But I was particularly blown away by the leather jackets (both womens and mens). Crazy studding and tons of zippers made basic black leather motorcycle jackets into wearable pieces of art. One has to wonder how inspired this collection was by the current William Rast model, Erin Wasson. I could see Erin wearing just about every piece from this collection.

Other standouts include the black vest (above), an off-white furry vest, and a fringed cowgirl-esque skirt (both below). What do you think of the collection? Too safe? Too overdone? Too celebrity-endorced (supposedly both Hilton sisters were at the show)?

Mary-Kate in Interview - March 2009

I didn't plan to have two Mary-Kate Olsen posts in a row, but that's how things work out sometimes. And this picture is so lovely, I just had to share it with you all. Mary-Kate will be the cover girl for Interview Magazine's March 2009 issue, and is seen here wearing a stunning Balenciaga design. Here's just a little snippet from the article:

The Mary-Kate that most of us don't know is a very thoughtful, intelligent woman with a blistering sense of humor and an enterprise that makes even hard-working friends feel like they aren't doing enough with their days. She walks quietly into rooms and gives you her full attention when you talk to her. And you always leave kind of wishing you'd hugged her more. Lately, she's been focusing on acting, and won kudos for her delightful performance as a weed-smoking Phish fan in last year's love letter to New York in the '90s, The Wackness. She and her sister are also hard at work on their two clothing lines, the higher end The Row and the more contemporary Elizabeth & James (the latter named after their other two siblings), and they are launching both shoe and men's collections later this year. The two even teamed up to publish a book of interviews last fall called Influence (Razorbill), in which they interviewed other artists and designers who have inspired them.
You can read more of the article and check out a few more (equally lovely) pictures, as well as watch a behind-the-scenes video, at Interview Magazine. And of course, if you're interested, be sure to check out the March 2009 issue of Interview for more!

I like your style: Sarah Jessica Parker

Here is Sarah Jessica Parker hosting the Refugees International performance of the George Packer play "Betrayed", Monday night in Washington DC. She wore a vintage '80s Emanuel Ungaro strapless tartan dress with a giant bow on the back, with a diamond necklace, diamond earrings, and a gold bracelet. Perfection, as always! Maybe the '80s weren't so bad after all? Check out more pics below.

Vogue Cover Girl: Blake Lively

Blake Lively, star of Gossip Girl and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, is on the cover of February's Vogue in an old-school Hollywood glamour shoot. The article mostly talks about Gossip Girl fashion and why the show has become such a hit. She's a great choice for a cover girl because she is the star of a show that is built on fashion, and she is just as beautiful and photogenic as any model I've seen! But maybe I'm biased, because I find her to be the most adorable person ever, and I'm a huge Gossip Girl fan. Check out a snippet from the interview below:

"The fashion is just unbelievable. You can watch our show on mute and be entertained," Lively says. And she's not overstating it. The characters wear designer clothes that teeter between unattainable chic and self-parody, be it Bass's wearing a tuxedo covered with paillettes that shimmer like a matador's suit or Blair's attending the dean's party at Yale with an Alice-in-Plunderland pewter-colored satin bow in her hair. For her part, Lively is entranced by Serena's authentically local look. "Just being here, walking around, you pick it up really quickly," she explains. "In New York, you put on skinny jeans and riding boots and a leather coat and handbag, and you take on that posture and character," Lively says. "It becomes very natural." Lively's natural style? Costume National boots, dark Rag & Bone trousers, and a Joie cashmere vest over a Ports 1961 white pointelle cashmere sweater, punctuated by Chanel earrings, a Chanel handbag, and a Jeri Cohen diamond bracelet. ("They let me borrow it, and now I can't take it off," Lively says mischievously.)

The Joie vest is a second-season development. Lively said that one day she showed up for work wearing hers, and discovered that the wardrobe crew had picked the exact same one for Serena. This tickled the star. "The more they work with me and see my style, and the more I learn about fashion, the more input I have," she explains. "It's more collaborative now than it was in the beginning because then I had no idea what I was doing."

Lively often jokingly refers to her California fashion pedigree as "sweatpants and UGGs," but actually, she has always had an interest in clothes, inspired by her mother, a former model from Georgia, who sews and used to take Lively as a child to boutiques and vintage stores and tailor adult clothes to fit her. "She just did that because she was so creative and because she didn't want me to be dressed in big T-shirts cinched with a plastic clip like all the rest of the kids." Ironically, it was fashion that gave Lively a taste of how cruel girls can be. When she entered a private school in Los Angeles in second grade, for the first and only time in her life she did not fit in. "It was the only school where people were just downright mean to me," she recalls. "They would make fun of my clothes because I dressed differently than the other kids." (Vogue)

Kate Bosworth: Don't forget your undies in this dress!

Don't worry, this isn't a picture of Kate Bosworth walking around LA. It's from the latest issue of Tank Magazine, from a photoshoot with Todd Cole. The pics are beautiful, in my humble opinion, styled wonderfully. But what do you think of the sheer bottoms? Would you rock this look? It's very reminicent of Carrie Bradshaw, except instead of being sheer on top it's flipped. I could see this possibly filtering down to high street fashion... and that frightens me! Check out another (nsfw) pic from this set at Fashion Copious.

I like your style: Rachel Bilson

Sequin Blazer: D&G Spring 09

Rachel Bilson hosted the opening of a D&G flagship store on Robertson Blvd. in Beverly Hills last night, looking fab as always in a navy blue sequin blazer and skinny jeans. What do you think of this look, was it too casual (seeing as everyone else seemed to be in dresses) or just right? I personally love it, but I'm a huge fan of her style in general - she can do no wrong!

I like your style: Sarah Jessica Parker

Here are some pictures of Sarah Jessica Parker at NYC Ballet's 2008-09 Opening Night Gala on Tuesday, November 25. She is wearing a Balmain dress and Balenciaga shoes. I personally love love love this outfit! But many hate it (in fact, 54% of people on Glamour call it a big fashion NO). What do you think?
