ALEX&RA

Alexandra Cipparone of ALEX&RA is a West Coast girl through and through. She grew up in San Diego, went to school in Berkeley, and now lives in San Francisco, and her designs reflect that laid-back California girl style. Alexandra designs skirts and dresses inspired by the California neighborhoods she has lived in. She explains that "Each neighborhood has a story to tell and by creating collections for each of them, I hope to communicate that remarkable diversity to the world."

The first collection Alexandra designed for ALEX&RA was the Broadway collection, inspired by her neighborhood in Pacific Heights, specifically Broadway Avenue. "The mix of architecture on this street is incredibly fascinating to me because these blocks represent such a rich history of San Francisco. The style here is ornate, but refined, a little bit intimidating, but welcoming as well. I tried to mimic these dichotomies in this collection, first and foremost with my choice of materials." ALEX&RA's second collection, the Marina collection, was inspired by the Marina neighborhood down the hill from where she currently lives. "It’s an inspiring area, alive with youth and beauty. Of course there are a lot of restaurants and bars there, but I went even further down the hill to the water. When you stand there, even for just a minute, you can’t help but be overtaken by this city. Never mind the crowds, you are surrounded by natural wonder with the blue water right before you and the Golden Gate bridge gleaming in the distance. It blows you away." Alexandra spoke with me about why she decided to be a fashion designer, what inspires her, and where she plans to take ALEX&RA in the next few seasons - read on!

When did you first decide you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I found my love for fashion design in high school. I was always cutting up club t-shirts and making them into cute tube tops and off-the-shoulder tops. I'd even embellish them with all sorts of gems. I guess I just saw them as blank
canvases and used my creativity to stand out from the rest.

What was the first item you ever sold?

The first item I ever sold was a custom designed Prom dress for a friend in high school. It was a wonderful project and turned out really well!

What did you learn about selling your designs through Etsy, and what made you
decide to open your own website to sell through?
Etsy is a great place to sell handmade goods. I learned a lot about the value of customer service and good communication. Both sellers and buyers are supportive and encouraged me a lot throughout the past few months. I am so thankful for being introduced to it! The reason I decided to open my own shop was to connect more closely with my customers. I want the identity of my brand to be how people remember my line, so it was important to me to establish that online presence. So far it has proved to be a great step! My customers now have direct access to my collections and can easily learn more about me and my line.

Where do you find inspiratio
n from in your designs?
I am inspired by so much! First and foremost, I am inspired by the city of San Francisco. It is a remarkable place alive with culture and diversity. Every street has a story to tell. Every person has something unique to admire. Even a short stroll around the city gives me so many great ideas to work with! I am also largely influenced by art and vintage design. I think they give my line a unique feeling of history and permanence - not simply a trend for the season.

What has been your favorite piece you have designed?
My favorite piece that I have designed so far has to be the Black Pencil Dress with Ruffles. I love how understated the dress seems at first, but then when you put it on you are just overwhelmed by how amazing it makes you feel. It's flirty, super feminine, and easy to wear. I would wear it every day if I could!

What type of girl do you envision wearing your designs?
The type of girl I envision wearing my designs is hard to say. I think my work appeals to a wide range of people - the younger crowd, the business crowd, the party girls, the students etc. That's what I love most about my line. What they have in common is their appreciation for handmade, high-quality work and the importance of staying unique. So much of fashion these days is duplicated, comes in a million different colors, and is worn by everyone on the street. My line is for the girls who want something of their own, something just for them.

Can you share a little about where you plan to take your line in the next few seasons? Any particular colors/fabrics/shapes you want to work with?
My next collection will be based on all the beautiful summer days spent in Golden Gate Park. It will include more dresses and more intricate skirts. My customers have responded really well to volume and detail, so I will definitely continue on that route. I am excited to work with more cottons and especially floral prints. It will be a very feminine collection to take my girls from summer into early fall. Keep checking back to my website for more updates!

If you are a California girl at heart, or you just want to get your hands on some amazingly designed skirts and dresses, ALEX&RA is the place to go! Shop at the ALEX&RA website, or the ALEX&RA etsy store.

Dana-Maxx

Dana-Maxx Pomerantz has been causing a bit of a stir in the blog-o-sphere lately, with writeups about her collections popping up on Glam.com and USAToday.com, as well as being featured in WWD. Perhaps it's the flirtatious quality of the dresses, or maybe it's the glamorous, timeless feel of the deigns. Whatever it is, Dana-Maxx's collections are in high demand!

Dana-Maxx's designs are ideal for the style-conscious, fashion-forward woman who is looking for high-quality pieces that are feminine, glam, and sophisticated. Much like the designer herself, these clothes are made for women who are strong, sexy, fun, and fearless! I got to chat with Dana-Maxx about her new Fall/Winter collection, titled "Sex, Love, and Heartbreak", what it was like working with Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs, and more! Read on...

How did you break in to the fashion industry?
I studied fashion design in high school and took classes at The Fashion Institute of Technology on the weekends. I went to FIT for college, majoring in fashion design, and during my time there I interned at Betsey Johnson. Soon thereafter I worked at Betsey full time, followed by freelancing at Marc Jacobs, until I be
gan my own company in 2007.

What was it like working with Betsey Johnson and Marc Jacobs?
Interning and working at Betsey Johnson was definitely a dream come true! When I interned there, I was so passionate about learning as much as I could and taking on any task they asked of me. Whether it was getting coffee or redesigning a skirt with Betsey herself, I treated each project as if it were the greatest thing that happened to me.
When I worked at Betsey Johnson, I had the amazing privilege of working one-on-one with Betsey herself. I admired how humble and real she was; she treated interns with the same amount of respect as her creative director. I was truly a "Betsey Girl"- as we use to call it; I loved the fun atmosphere and loved working in design! Working at Marc Jacobs was great too! I got to see how differently the company was run from my previous experience. It taught me that there isn't just one way of doing a job well done!

How did you decide you wanted to start your own line?
Ever since I was a little girl I always wanted to be a fashion designer. I use to have a pretend store setup in my bedroom. My customers were my stuffed animals and I would sit and sketch clothing for them and take orders. Who knew that is exactly what I would be doing 20 years later! Fashion was always in my blood- I would sleep it, eat it, and dream it. I could not wait to make that dream a reality one day.

Could you explain a bit about the inspiration behind your Fall/Winter collection "Sex, Love, and Heartbreak"?

The Fall/Winter 2009 collection was inspired by love gained and love lost and the struggles we face in this economy. The collection is moody and a bit edgy. Each collection I create has a definite inspiration and is an extension of me.

Do you have a favorite piece from your Fall/Winter collection?
My favorite piece is probably the Felix Ring Dress because I love party dresses and this is a great take on a classic silhouette with modern detailing. When I was creating the dress, I was thinking that about how much people love to accessorize their clothing. I thought why not create a dress that looks like it has a necklace and a set in belt? It's like 3 pieces in one! The great thing is that the 'necklace' and 'belt' is that they are made from genuine metallic lamb leather, so it gives it a great sparkle and edge.

Are your designs currently sold online?

We have a lot of people asking when they will be able to order clothing on our website. In a month customers will finally be able to purchase their favorite Dana-Maxx styles online! Check out www.dana-maxx.com. Until then, please email orders@dana-maxx.com with your order.

original fake

Tee: Hanes
Shorts: old, couldn't find a tag

Sorry to post so many pictures of myself in a row! I've been trying to keep myself away from shopping websites because I'm jobless and broke right now, so that has been resulting in a lot of basement scouring and DIYs. I actually found these shorts that I DIYed a few months back but had yet to wear, they're really comfortable and I'm glad they can now be in my summer rotation! This CC shirt is kind of done to death, but I still really like the idea of reclaiming pretentious logos. I might keep adding to this one until it's absurdly fake and hilarious - depends on how long it keeps my interest.

Anyways, how are you all doing in this heat? It's awful, but at the same time I'm so glad that summer is here!!!

Basement bags

Dress: Vintage(?)
Scarf as Belt: Urban Outfitters
Sandals: Target

This afternoon I went through just a few of the hundreds of plastic bags filled with old clothes in my parents basement. Tons of neon striped sweaters, stirrup leggings, and old school uniforms were found, and faaaaaar too many pieces came back upstairs with me to be tried on. The super-sheer dress above was one of my finds, I have no idea where it came from or why the hem is raw and uneven, but I think that I can do something fun with it! I also found some of my old leotards from when I studied ballet, with strappy and low scooping backs. Those will definitely be fun to play with this summer! I styled up one of the leotards below.

Jacket: Ralph Lauren
Leotard: Capezio
Skirt: American Apparel

The King

I love lazy Sundays, waking up in the middle of the afternoon, spending hours sipping coffee and flipping through TFS. It's the perfect day to be inspired by old James King photos. And it's James, not Jaime.

These are a few of my favorite things...

Summer just began, but Fall/Winter collections like this one from Omelle are making me antsy for the cold and snow! Nicole LaFave and Cherise Angelle's Omelle shoes are back for another season, this one possibly even better than the last! The Omelle F/W 2009 collection is inspired by the designers favorite things - knitwear, pockets, and their signature hex shape. The color palette of the shoes is similar to that of their Spring collection, consisting mainly of neutrals. The duo also uses a variety of textiles and materials in their designs, including cabled knits, merino wool, felted fabric, lush bright patent, and rich suede and calf skins. The Omelle F/W 2009 collection will be in stores and online at Omelle.com by the end of August/early September - I can't wait!

Es Trella

Es Trella is an Australian-based clothing line born out of a collaboration between Sarah King and one of my favorite shoe designers, Tristan Blair. It seems as though the two have read my mind and created the collection of my dreams! Ripe with cutouts, sheer skirts and tops, leather bustiers, fringe jackets, and brightly colored silk pants, it is everything I wish my wardrobe was! But it's not just for the ladies - the duo designed classy jackets, pants, and shirts for the men in your life too!

I was lucky enough to be able to chat with one half of Es Trella, Sarah King, and she let me in on what it's like collaborating with Tristan Blair, where the name Es Trella came from, and more! Read on...

How and why did you choose the name Es Trella?
Es Trella is my grandmother's name and my middle name. Es Trella is the Spanish word for "star". I choose it for good luck - I like the thought of people walking around with what I consider my grandmother's luck on the backs of their necks.

How do you divide up the designing with fellow Es Trella designer Tristan Blair?
Tristan and I design separately but we come together to have our designs approved by one another. We are constantly bouncing ideas off each other, the designs aren't used if one of us isn't happy. We inspire each other... We once locked ourselves away in a room in Bali for 2 weeks with the shutters down to finish a collection.

Where do you find inspiration from for your designs?
Elegant women inspire me.

What type of a person do you have in mind when designing Es Trella clothes?
The girl that is a mystery.

Do you have a favorite piece from your Winter 09 collection?
The leather jacket.

Is Es Trella currently available to buy online?
Yes, Es Trella can be purchased at Beginning Boutique.

Jazz music, reunions, and dancing

Tank: Hollister
Shorts: Siwy
Shoes: Nine West
Necklace: Margo Morrison

Ah, weekends. I wish they were longer! This was definitely a fun one. Friday night I went to the Jazz Festival with my BF to see the Eric Alexander Quartet. I don't really know much about jazz, but I thought the pianist, Harold Mabern, was ridiculously talented. He had performed with the likes of Nat King Cole and Oscar Peterson so I shouldn't have been surprised. Afterward the BF and I walked around downtown, got some drinks, took some pictures, and fun was had.

Saturday was the strangest. It was my 5 year high school reunion/cocktail party. I ended up chilling with a bunch of people who I hadn't seen in 5 years, getting drunk in the quad of our old school. Weird! Then we all went out to this random sleazy club and danced and drank more and bonded, it was kind of like no time had gone by at all. Of course now we've all gone back to our different corners of the world, some back to Boston, one all the way back to Norway (!!), but I hope we can all get together in another 5 years - but hopefully even sooner!

What were you all up to this weekend?

Bright Sunshiny Day

Tee: Gap
Shorts: Siwy
Sandals: Nine West
Scarf: Urban Outfitters
Sunglasses: Burberry

I'm pretty exhausted right now, so I'm just going to summarize my thoughts into bullet points.
  • I am becoming addicted to weardrobe.com, you have to check it out, the ladies on that site are so talented at putting together outfits, plus there are weekly contests to win $50 giftcards to stores like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel (and if you're already on weardrobe, friend me!)
  • My new shoes got delivered today, Nine West Ciraco's, and I love them so so much. I also got another new pair of shoes a week or two ago, lace-up flat sandals from Target, which I also love. I have too many black sandals. But I'm sure I'll buy even more this summer.
  • I saw the movie "Observe and Report" yesterday with my BF at the dollar movie theater, and wow, it was just terrible. But I've heard "The Hangover" is really funny, so we might go see that this weekend to cleanse the pallet.
  • Also this weekend is my 5 year high school reunion. Have any of you gone to a high school reunion? I have no idea what to expect, I'm a little nervous about it because I haven't kept in touch with very many people from my high school. But it's a cocktail party, so the free drinks should put everyone at ease!
  • I miss having long hair. Any suggestions on how to make your hair grow faster?

Gossip Girl: Real NYC Stories Revealed + Dove!

I know I'm not alone when I say that it would be my dream to live the life of Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl. Living in a deluxe multiple-floor apartment on the Upper East Side, dating a dude who owns his own company at 17 and rides around in a limo, and having a mother who is a clothing designer all seems pretty ideal to me. But of course I know that it's just a TV show, no one really lives like that, right? Wrong! Dove has partnered with Gossip Girl to present "Gossip Girl: Real NYC Stories Revealed", featuring women who truly live the Gossip Girl life! As you can imagine, I am green with envy. The four women featured are:
  • Chrissie Miller: fashion designer and founder of the Sophomore apparel brand
  • Faythallegra Coleman: emerging Brooklyn-based filmmaker and writer
  • Dani Stahl: style director for Nylon magazine, jewelry designer and “IT” girl
  • Lara Meiland-Shaw: co-founder of a Lara Hélène Bridal Atelier and philanthropist
If you feel like drooling with envy (like I am right now), you can watch the profiles of each of these women at CWTV.com.

How does Dove tie in to all this? Like "Gossip Girl: Real NYC Stories Revealed",
"Dove Go Fresh is inspired by today’s real-life 20-something women who are more accomplished and independent than ever, pursuing and attaining significant achievements before turning 30. However, this race to achieve success is keeping many of them from fully enjoying their hard-earned accomplishments. Dove wants to give these women a fresh perspective and help them recognize a wider definition of success and ultimately feel beautiful. Dove Go Fresh is a fragrance-driven product collection now offered in four deliciously fragrant variants and available in beauty bar and body wash, deodorants and matching body mists. The Dove Go Fresh collection is available in food, drug, club, mass and club retailers."
I have tried out the nectarine and white ginger Dove Go Fresh bodywash and oh my gosh, best scent ever! I'm usually a Bath & Body Works girl, but Dove is infinitely more moisturizing, and everytime I catch a wiff of the nectarine smell I'm put in a summer state of mind. Dove Go Fresh comes in three other scents - clean waterlily and fresh mint, sparkling grapefruit and lemongrass, and crisp cucumber and calming green tea - but I definitely recommend the nectarine and white ginger! And if you do want to try it out, be sure to click here first and get a $1 off coupon.

Show a lil skin

Tee: Elizabeth & James
Skirt: Forever 21
Socks: Ozone
Boots: Nine West
Jewelry: Marc by Marc Jacobs bracelet,
F21 rings, gifts from BF, etc.

I'm really into this new photo editing option that makes your pictures look yellowed and vintage, I promise not to use it too much but I just couldn't resist playing around with it. Yea, I'm a geek like that. Anyhow, this outfit isn't really special in any way except for the socks - I love these socks! I got them from Ozone Socks and have worn them several times already because they go with almost everything in my mostly black/white/grey wardrobe. They're really comfortable and actually stay up above my knee without sliding down, which is usually a huge problem with thigh-high socks and one of the main reasons I don't wear them more often. But these socks, I love! I especially love their psychedelic print that makes me dizzy if I stare at it for too long.

Alexander Wang Cruise 2010

So maybe it's a bit of the same-old same-old, rehashing past seasons, but that doesn't mean that I don't still want every piece in the Alexander Wang Cruise 2010 collection. Especially the sweater and bag above, and the cutout and zipper dresses below. What do you guys all think? You can check out the whole collection at Style.com.
