Style vs. Comfort: What to wear when you're traveling

Here is the question of the day: When traveling, what do you prioritize - looking good or being comfortable? I spent over 5 hours in a car yesterday driving back to school, and I definitely prioritized comfort. I was wearing huuuuge sweats, a t-shirt, and Uggs. However, I have been looking through pictures of celebrities in airports and they somehow manage to look fabulous after 14+ hour flights. From studying these pics, I think I may be starting to understand the keys to looking fab AND being comfortable while traveling. Here's what I think you need to have when traveling (and correct me if I'm wrong, or feel free to add anything else in the comments!)

1) Layers - celebs seem to layer tees, sweaters, jackets, scarves, hats, and more when they travel. It makes sense, because you can never be sure what temperature it will be on the plane or where you land, so it's better to be able to add and remove layers as necessary.

2) Giant sunglasses - so that you don't have to worry if your makeup got smudged while you were napping.

3) A fabulous carry-on bag - it really does make a difference how your carry-on bags look, because they tend to be very large and therefore are a focal point.

4) Easy hairstyle - either a messy bun or down and wavy, you don't want to have to worry about ruining your hairstyle during your flight.

5) Flat shoes - there's no reason to break out the stilettos when you're traipsing around an airport lugging heavy bags. Just make sure they're good-looking flats, like the boots many celebs are wearing above, and not ratty sneakers.

You totally got it right about being both comfortable and stylish while traveling. I always do some thin layers like a nice tee and sweater paired with slim jeans. Always a pashmina-like scarf because it doubles as a wrap to cover up with if I take a nap. Comfortable but chic boots because my feet always get cold. Sunglasses are a must because they disguise that 'tired from traveling' look. I take a pretty, black carry on bag. I put my hair in a bun and usually brush it right before I arrive. :)

Thanks so much for the comment! You are definitely a stylish traveler, and I plan to take your advice about using a pashmina to double as a cover up for naps - I would have never thought of that!

This is a really good post. I am a huge layers person and it so important since where you are going might not feel like where your leaving from . I always wear my sunglasses everywhere, and your right they are great to hide a no make up day or a smudge.

Great advice. I usually wear jeans, flats, and a sweater on top of a tee or tank. For me being comfortable and stylish on a plane is more about the state of mind that comes with having my creature comforts with me while I'm travelling--a magazine and a novel, headphones to watch the in-flight movies with, a huge bottle of water, and a snack.
